Who did Gareth Southgate play for?

  • Crystal Palace – 1988-1995
  • Aston Villa – 1995-2001
  • Middlesbrough – 2001-2006

Before his stint as a coach, Gareth Southgate was a player at the top level of the game for three clubs.

His first major breakthrough came at Crystal Palace, where he made over 150 appearances in a seven-year stint from 1988-1995 as captain in central midfield.

A switch to Aston Villa followed, where he would be converted to a centre-back, eventually lifting the League Cup.

In 2001, Southgate left Villa Park to join Middlesbrough, where he would once again be named captain and lifted the League Cup for a second time, before retiring in 2006.

The defender had a career on the international stage too, representing England from 1995-2004.

Southgate earned 57 caps for the Three Lions, though his most infamous moment would be a penalty miss in the Euro 1996 semi-final against Germany.

What teams has Gareth Southgate managed?

  • Middlesbrough – 2006-2009
  • England under-21s – 2013-2016
  • England – 2016-Present

Gareth Southgate’s managerial career started at Middlesbrough, following the end of his playing career at the Riverside Stadium.

In three years at Boro, the club would suffer relegation from the Premier League, with Southgate dismissed during the following Championship campaign.

A four-year break followed before the manager returned, this time with the England under-21s team.

Southgate’s three-year stint with the youth side helped set out the foundations with which he would move onto the senior team role.

Roy Hodgson and Sam Allardyce both left the England head coach position in 2016, leading to Southgate taking charge on an interim basis.

While there seemed no intention to take the position full-time, that’s exactly what happened.

A World Cup semi-final in 2018 was followed by a final in Euro 2020 – though both ended in cruel defeats.

A quarter-final loss to France came in the 2022 World Cup, though hopes remain that Euro 2024 can be England’s year.
