In today’s society, it seems like everyone is on the hunt for the perfect relationship, many people are obsessed with dating and can’t bear the thought of going through life alone. On the other hand, other people admit how satisfied they are with being single.

In Simon Sinek’s A Bit of Optimism podcast episode titled Happily Friended with author, journalist, and producer Rhaina Cohen, they discuss how ‘society treats marriage like the end goal of human intimacy.’

Within the podcast episode, Simon Sinek poses the question: “What would life look like if we made friendship the goal?”

The pair talk about redefining what friendship means in our lives, letting people connect in new and deeper ways, suggesting that it might take the pressure off romantic partners to fulfill all of our social needs.

Shown in a TikTok clip, the life coach reveals that he has been single a lot of my life and people have criticized him for it.

Sinek explains he has a friend who is single and they “have a friendship that without sex is akin to some people’s marriages. I would say better than some people’s marriages.”

Importance of platonic relationships

In response, Rhaina Cohen explains that the term ‘relationship’ now has been monopolized by romantic relationships, where your romantic partner or your spouse is supposed to be a confidant, a lover, along with a best friend all in one.

According to StarLeaf, having strong, meaningful connections in your life are incredibly important for mental health. Connections and friendships are more beneficial for people than sexual attraction and physical intimacy.

Similar to the views of Simon Sinek, maintaining platonic friendships or feeling platonic love for someone can help people feel more positive about everything in life.
