Report: 'Really fast' forward has surprised everyone and decided he wants PL move, Liverpool are interested

Liverpool are looking for the right forward to add to their selection of firepower up front.

The Reds’ attack is one of the most fearsome in Europe, with five excellent options already to choose from.

But with wastefulness growing towards the end of the season, the feeling is that Liverpool are once again in the market for something new.

That has seen a plethora of attackers linked with moves to Anfield ahead of the transfer window. Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is the latest to be suggested, as Michael Edwards looks to the Premier League market.

Outside of England though, there are even more interesting options. Now, one player who new head coach Arne Slot knows very well has reportedly drifted onto Liverpool’s radar.

Liverpool looking at Santiago Gimenez

With Slot set to get to work over the weekend, it isn’t a surprise to hear Liverpool being linked with players who the 45-year-old has worked with before.

Slot is also gearing up to bring a number of his old coaching team from Feyenoord along with him. As a result, they may be keen to target players they have a collective knowledge of.

One of those who could fit what Liverpool are looking for is Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

Gimenez has been a regular source of goals for Slot ever since he arrived from Cruz Azul in 2022. The Mexico international bagged 49 goals in 86 games under Liverpool’s new head coach.

With Slot now departing though, Mexican outlet TV Azteca claim that Gimenez is also looking for a way out of De Kuip.

It’s claimed that while those close to the 23-year-old expected that he would want to move to Spain, Gimenez has actually decided that he’d like to try English football.

With this revelation in mind, Liverpool are reportedly interested in the striker. Gimenez is said to be focused on the upcoming Copa America tournament with Mexico, so won’t make a decision on his next move before his country’s involvement is over. After that though, it’s game on.

Dirk Kuyt hails Santiago Gimenez

Gimenez has been one of the best players in Dutch football over the past two seasons. He’s really made the difference for Feyenoord.

Another man who knows all about firing the Rotterdammers to the Eredivisie title is former Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt.

Kuyt was captain of Feyenoord the last time they won the title before Slot’s team in 2023. And judging from quotes published by onefootball.com last May, the 43-year-old is a real fan of Gimenez.

“He’s back here in the middle of the defenders and he’s really fast,” Kuyt raves. “Watching the keeper before he shoots, the rest. In my opinion, he is currently the best striker in the Eredivisie.”

Liverpool obviously aren’t missing a fast striker up front. Not many can beat Darwin Nunez in a foot race. Nunez aside though, the Reds could do with a little more pace in their forward line.

Tottenham, Southampton and -somewhat bizarrely – Leeds United are said to be Liverpool’s competition for Gimenez.
