Newark’s annual Armed Forces Day event to return for parade, live music and flypast in June

Residents can show their support for the armed forces community while enjoying live music and activities on Armed Forces Day.

Newark will be hosting its annual Armed Forces Day event on Sunday, June 30, from 10am until 3pm.

It is a chance to show support and provide a much-valued morale boost for the men and women who make up the armed forces community, past, present and future — currently serving personnel and service families, veterans, and cadets.

The lead for the annual event rotates among the three principal armed forces, and this year’s event is led by the Royal Navy.

On the day, the annual parade will form up in the London Road Car Park at 11.45am, and arrive at the marketplace at 11.55am, where it will be inspected by the area’s dignitaries.

There will be a small market on with craft stalls, and live music from the Newark and Sherwood Concert Band and 40s singer Johnny Victory.

There will also be a Scalextric track for people to have a go on, alongside a Fox tank.

A variety of armed forces will hold information stalls at the market.

At 2.20pm the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Lancaster Bomber will be doing a flypast — a sight not to be missed.

Neil Ross, Newark and Sherwood District Council Armed Forces Champion said: “Our Armed Forces Day event is an opportunity for the whole town and surrounding communities to come together in gratitude for our armed forces.

“We thank our armed forces for protecting our freedoms, both at home, and abroad, through our alliances, especially NATO. Also, for all the work they do around the world to strengthen the rule of law, to promote peace, and to support communities affected by natural disasters.

“They perform these tasks on our behalf, with dedication, personal sacrifice, and very often physical hardship and danger.

“We also remember the wider armed forces community, including the veterans, the cadets, the volunteers, families, and charities through which so many of us hold a personal stake in our armed forces. Armed Forces Day gives us all a chance to come together in thanks and celebration.”
