'It's quite weird': Tony Cascarino says it's still unclear what Chelsea player's best role actually is

Tony Cascarino has suggested what he finds quite weird about Enzo Fernandez after the Chelsea midfielder endured a difficult first full campaign with the Blues.

It seems fair to say that Chelsea fans have only seen glimpses of the quality which persuaded the Blues to part with such a huge sum to bring him to Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Fernandez arrived shortly after winning the World Cup with Argentina, with the 21-year-old named as the best young player at the tournament.

Unfortunately, the money spent on Enzo and Moises Caicedo is yet to be vindicated.

Enzo Fernandez labelled quite weird as Chelsea struggles continue

Caicedo did improve as the season went on, scoring that audacious goal from the halfway line on the final day of the season. Enzo meanwhile, spent the final weeks of the campaign on the sidelines due to injury.

The 23-year-old will be hoping that the imminent arrival of Enzo Maresca proves to be a turning point. But, speaking on talkSPORT, Tony Cascarino suggested that Maresca’s first task will be to work out what Enzo’s best role even is.

“You can watch him for Argentina and you could watch him play for Chelsea, and you’re not really sure; if he’s a holding midfielder at times, he’s an attacking midfielder or just centrally matching up Caicedo,” he said.

“It’s quite weird how he’s floated in that midfield position with no absolute certainty of what he is. He is a really good footballer, you don’t play for Argentina and play for big clubs like he has, he’s a talented lad. It’s getting the best out of him.”

Argentinian needs to step up with Blues considering controversial decision this summer

Chelsea are still considering what could be an incredibly unpopular decision with the fans, by selling Conor Gallagher over the summer transfer window.

Should Gallagher leave, Maresca is going to need the other midfield players available to him to step up, particularly Enzo and Caicedo, given how much was spent on them in the first place.

There have been signs that Caicedo may be turning a corner, which is encouraging when you consider how good he had been at Brighton before his move.

But Enzo has much more to prove at the start of next season. Should he struggle under another manager, Chelsea fans will start to have serious concerns about whether he will ever realise the potential the club thought he had.
