‘Down the shortlist’: Journalist says ‘poor form’ has lowered 187-point driver’s chance of retaining 2025 seat

There are currently eight Formula 1 teams thinking about whether to stick or twist with their current driver line-ups for 2025.

Sauber and Ferrari have already decided to make a change and plenty of other manufacturers are likely to follow suit.

Writing on the Formula 1 website, journalist Lawrence Barretto has shared one driver who is looking less and less likely to retain his seat.

With so many drivers out of contract next year, team principals are suddenly in a position of power when it comes to negotiations.

The likes of Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas are available to sign from next year and if they shuffle further down the paddock then eventually a few drivers will miss out altogether.

One of those drivers is potentially Kevin Magnussen who has fallen down Haas’s shortlist for 2025.

Even with Nico Hulkenberg moving on at the end of the season, Ayao Komatsu might decide to make a double switch and potentially introduce a driver not currently on the grid into the team.

Kevin Magnussen has fallen down Haas’s shortlist for 2025

On the face of it, Haas are having one of their best seasons in years.

Despite their struggles in 2023, Haas now sit 7 in the Constructors’ Championship and have taken advantage of almost every situation to score points.

However, Nico Hulkenberg has been the man who’s delivered time and again this year, scoring six out of the seven points Haas have secured in 2024.

Not only that but he’s also finished 11 on three occasions, narrowly missing out on adding to his tally.

In contrast, Kevin Magnussen has only recorded one top-ten finish this year, coming home in 10 in Australia thanks to George Russell’s late crash.

The Danish driver has 187 career points but this year he’s quickly accumulated more penalty points than championship points.

He’s closing in on a one-race ban and could potentially count himself fortunate that he wasn’t penalised for his huge shunt with Sergio Perez.

Unfortunately for Magnussen, he’s now falling down the shortlist of potential drivers Haas are considering offering a contract to in 2025.

It’s hard to see him being picked up by another team on the grid should his second spell with the American outfit end in the winter.

Kevin Magnussen faces a long wait to discover his Haas fate

Talking about the 31-year-old’s future, Barretto said: “Whereas once Haas were eyeing stability and planning to keep Magnussen, it is believed his poor form and interest in the team from race-winning drivers has dropped the Dane down the shortlist.”

Haas unsurprisingly have plenty of drivers on their shortlist who would be more appealing than keeping Magnussen next year.

Oliver Bearman looks set to take part in his rookie season in F1 with Haas next year after impressing in his Ferrari cameo last year.

Esteban Ocon looks set to leave Alpine at the end of the season and Haas offers him a chance to stay on the grid.

Ten-time race winner Valtteri Bottas is another driver who knows he needs to find a new team and Haas is one option on the table for the Finn.
