Report: Chelsea are in race to sign £35m-rated player who is 'one of the best' in his position

Chelsea have entered the race to sign a £35m-rated player who is ‘one of the best’ in his position, according to a recent report.

Enzo Maresca is set to take the reigns at Stamford Bridge, leaving Leicester City after just one year in charge.

The former Manchester City assistant led The Foxes back to the Premier League at the first time of asking and clearly Todd Boehly has been impressed by him.

That said, ahead of Maresca’s imminent arrival, it seems he’s already identified his first signing at Chelsea.

Chelsea eye Giorgi Mamardashvili

According to Football.London, Chelsea are eyeing a move for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili this summer transfer window.

The £35m-rated shot-stopper has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United in recent weeks but it seems The Blues could be preparing a late hijack, just as they’re set to do with Tosin Adarabioyo.

Mamardashvili, who is considered ‘one of the best’ young goalkeepers on the continent, has been admired by Chelsea chiefs for quite some time.

The 23-year-old impressed scouts during his clean-sheet display against Real Madrid last May.

Giorgi Mamardashvili would be ideal for Enzo Maresca’s system

It’s pretty evident, that Maresca is keen to add a ball-playing goalkeeper to his ranks this summer transfer window.

The Italian head coach uses his goalkeeper as a deep-lying playmaker, as evinced by Mads Hermansen at Leicester.

So, quite clearly he doesn’t fancy Dorde Petrovic or Robert Sanchez to play that role, instead preferring to dip into the market.

Mamardashvili would be ideal for his system as he’s very comfortable playing out from the back and perhaps a little more assured at claiming crosses, using his colossal 6ft 6 frame.
