The Election Commission of India declared its readiness to conduct assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, revealing that the Union Territory achieved its highest voter turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the past forty years.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi to recap the extensive seven-phase 2024 general elections that concluded on June 1, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar affirmed the commission’s readiness for assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
He highlighted that Jammu and Kashmir saw its highest voter turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections over the past four decades, with an overall percentage of 58.58%. The Kashmir Valley alone recorded a turnout of 51.05%.
The seven-phase Lok Sabha elections concluded on June 1, with vote counting scheduled for tomorrow. Exit polls on June 1 predicted a decisive victory for the PM Modi-led NDA, projecting the alliance to secure over 350 seats.
Meanwhile, stringent security measures have been implemented for the vote counting process in Jammu and Kashmir.
Exit polls for Jammu and Kashmir indicated expectations of the National Conference winning all three Lok Sabha seats in the Kashmir Valley, the BJP securing two seats in the Jammu division, and the Congress clinching the lone Lok Sabha seat in Ladakh.
