Music star suddenly dies days before he was going to retire - 'He will be truly missed'

Colin Gibb, member of the iconic pop band Black Lace, has sadly passed away as former bandmates and beyond pen tributes.

Certain songs just have it… that extra something that means they’ll be played at parties until the end of time. Fans of Black Lace may argue that was the British pop band’s mission statement all along. Known for such hits as Agadoo, Do The Conga, and Superman, the novelty group made a massive splash when representing the UK at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1979. Despite only ranking seventh that year, their music has become a certified staple at parties ever since, crowned by many as the ultimate guilty pleasure. On an upsetting note, one of its long-standing members, Colin Gibb, has died.

Black Lace member Colin Gibb has died at 70

Tragically, the wife of Black Lace’s Colin Gibb, Sue Kelly, has announced that her husband passed away on Sunday, June 2nd 2024.

The group adopted the name Black Lace in 1975, the year before the celebrity came aboard to remain a permanent band member, helping them cement a place in music history with a string of party hits like Wig-Wam Bam and I Am The Music Man.

“It is with heartbreaking news that I am letting you all know my dearest husband Colin Gibb died this afternoon,” Sue wrote in a statement.

“I love you Colin, spent 22 years living your Agadoo dream, we were due to retire to Spain on Thursday, you were so happy, so looking forward to our new life, now you’re gone. As we used to say, always love you forever.”

News of his retirement so shortly before his passing has inevitably shocked members of his family, friends, and fans. He announced mid-May that he was playing a final show in Tenerife that very week.

Of course, the band has also offered an official statement addressing the tremendous loss.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our great friend Colin Gibb,” they shared on Facebook. “Colin was one of the founder members of Black Lace, together with Alan Barton, and will be truly missed by everyone who knew him.”

They signed off by expressing their “love and support” to those close to him. The cause of death was not confirmed.

Bandmates and fans offer tributes

Since the unfortunate announcement, everybody from former bandmates to adoring fans have shared some of the most wonderful and touching tributes to their dear friend and musician.

“So sad to hear the passing of my singing partner with Black Lace,” former bandmate Dene Michael shared. “RIP my friend Colin Gibb. God Bless. We had some great times together touring the world.”

A friend took to X/Twitter to share their memories: “Sad Colin Gibb from Black Lace has died, only days after telling everyone he was quitting to relax! I have seen & talked to Colin 30+ times in Tenerife. Always very amiable & friendly.”

Jokingly, they added: “Fair dos, I needed 163 pints to enjoy the music, but seriously, it was a good laugh. RIP.”

A friend of his, Steve White, celebrated Colin’s impact in a loving statement.

“When anyone has mocked this act over the years–and let’s be honest, many have–I have always flown the flag for Black Lace,” he wrote. “There is not a DJ, holiday park, or family entertainer anywhere that hasn’t made use of the hits they recorded at some point.”

One fan cherished that he may be gone, but “the music will live on.” It’s a beautiful perspective.
