Player who was released by Everton picks up prestigious award after scoring 19 goals this season

A player who was released by Everton in 2022 has picked up a prestigious award after a 19-goal season.

It’s fair to say that Everton have made plenty of blunders in the transfer window in recent years.

During the Farhad Moshiri era, we’ve seen the likes of Cenk Tosun and Davy Klaassen arrive for significant fees, only to underperform at Goodison Park.

Another player who struggled during his time in Merseyside was Salomon Rondon, who was snapped up on deadline day back in the summer of 2021.

The Venezuelan striker netted just three times in 31 appearances for the Toffees before being released in December 2022.

Now, the former Everton striker has picked up an award after his performances in the Concacaf Champions Cup.

Former Everton star Salomon Rondon scoops award

Rondon netted a total of 19 goals from Mexican outfit Pachuca this season. But his best performances have undoubtedly come in this year’s Concacaf Champions Cup.

He bagged nine goals in seven games in the competition, including two hat-tricks in the last-16 and quarter-final.

Most recently, his brace helped Pachuca defeat Columbus 3-0 in the final on Sunday and led to him scooping the Best Player award.

Rondon’s career since Everton departure

Rondon has enjoyed a fair amount of success since his miserable spell at Everton. The former Newcastle United man picked up two trophies with River Plate, including an Argentinian title.

His latest goalscoring heroics have secured him his third piece of silverware since being released by the Toffees.

Despite his obvious shortcomings in Merseyside, it’s difficult to be too harsh on Rondon considering he was snapped up on a free transfer.

It was a move that made little sense at the time but was clearly driven by former boss Rafael Benitez after the duo linked up at Newcastle together.
