Drunk driver veered into oncoming traffic, seriously injured motorcyclist, cops say

A man from Florida is facing criminal charges after he critically injured a motorcyclist in New Jersey while allegedly driving drunk.

Terence J. Cotter, 67, of Delray Beach, Florida, was arrested at the scene of the crash on Sunday. Authorities charged him with assault by auto and driving while intoxicated, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office said in a news release Monday.

Public court records indicate he also received motor vehicle violations for reckless driving, careless driving, unsafe lane change and failure to possess a vehicle registration document.

A 911 caller reported a crash involving a car and motorcycle had occurred on East Crescent Avenue in Mahwah. Cotter’s car had been traveling south on the road when it veered into the opposing lane and struck the bike, investigators said.

The motorcycle driver suffered serious injuries from the impact, prosecutors said.
