'Saved my life': Chris Powell makes remarkable Sheffield Wednesday claim after previous 'health scare'

A well-liked Sheffield Wednesday figure has spoken out on how the club ‘saved’ his life.

Sheffield Wednesday pulled off an unthinkable achievement by avoiding relegation in the 2023/24 season, thanks to manager Danny Rohl.

The 35-year-old German, who arrived as a relative unknown on British shores, steered the Owls to a 20th place finish, having since signed a new three-year deal at the club.

But Rohl couldn’t have done it without the help of his playing staff and backroom staff.

The players all bought into Rohl’s ideas and played an equally huge part in Sheffield Wednesday’s eventual 20th place finish in the Championship.

And in the backroom team, Rohl added names like Henrik Pedersen and Sascha Lense among others, with former England and Spurs coach Chris Powell also joining.

He brings a wealth of experience to the team and he’s now spoken out on how Sheffield Wednesday helped to save his life.

Chris Powell: Sheffield Wednesday ‘saved my life’

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast with Sam Allardyce, Powell discussed Rohl, and his own arrival at Sheffield Wednesday.

Powell said: “I think Sheffield Wednesday changed my life, and saved my life in many ways.

“I had a bit of a health scare which I won’t go into, but then I joined Sheffield Wednesday in October, three points after 11 games.

“The previous manager had moved on and I got a call from Danny and someone who knew Danny as well before we spoke… The more I spoke to Danny, I thought this would be right for me.

“But I remember saying to him, ‘It would be a minor miracle if we do this because no one’s ever done it’.”

Chris Powell future at Sheffield Wednesday

Powell is certainly a well-liked name among fans, and it can’t be argued the impact that someone with his experience and knowledge would’ve had in the run-in.

He’s a vastly experienced former player and now coach. But when there was uncertainty around Rohl’s future, there was uncertainty around Powell’s too.

It was claimed that any club could’ve poached Rohland his backroom team, including Powell, for £10million compensation.

But Rohl has since signed a new three-year deal and shortly before, it was revealed that Powell would also receive a new deal if Rohl did.

So it looks like Powell is here to stay and that’ll come to the delight of Rohl, the players, and the fans, with Sheffield Wednesday now having a huge chance to build something really positive.

There’s a big summer ahead in S6 with plenty of names coming onto the Owls’ transfer radar.
