’Tottenham's the benchmark’: Gary Neville says he's 'absolutely certain' at what Manchester United need to do

You probably never thought you would hear it, but Tottenham Hotspur are now labelled as ‘the benchmark’ for Manchester United.

The two teams, in recent years, have endured equally frustrating seasons, but despite the chaos at Old Trafford, two trophies have still been delivered by Erik ten Hag.

It’s what Tottenham fans crave and they have been trying to push for. But Manchester United’s FA Cup final win over Manchester City, amid their instability, is proof that it can happen even during the darkest of times.

Whilst Manchester United will forever be a bigger club and draw than Tottenham on the pitch, you can’t make the same argument for what is happening off it right now.

Only recently, after Manchester United’s home defeat to Arsenal, the rain poured down on Manchester in typical style and highlighted how poorly managed Old Trafford has been, with more leaks than Sheffield United’s defence this season.

Gary Neville stated how he is ‘absolutely certain’ that his boyhood club need a stadium that is befitting of some of the best in Europe right now.

The legendary right-back used Tottenham as an example and stated their stadium is ‘brand new’ and ‘we need to get to that level’, as he told Manchester United’s Podcast.

Spurs moved into their new 62k seater stadium back in 2019 after leaving White Hart Lane, with Daniel Levy getting lauded and applauded for the part he played.

Yes, it hasn’t resulted in trophies for the London club, and in truth, they aren’t any closer to lifting silverware, but it’s still proof that everything off the pitch is world-class.

And it’s where Neville wants Manchester United to be, as he sent out a passionate plea.

Redevelopment of Manchester United’s Old Trafford

“What I am absolutely certain of is that we need to have a stadium that is up there with some of the other great stadiums in Europe and in this country, at this moment in time,” said Neville about Old Trafford.

“Tottenham is the benchmark. It’s a stunning stadium, brand new, and we need to get to that level.

“Man United is a club that has to be inspired and motivated by its history, but be a modern club that moves forward and that means from a people perspective, and it means from a place perspective.”

Tottenham Hotspur’s Stadium

Whether fans like to hear it or not, the finances of football have hit such levels that you need to push every button you have.

If that means transcending your stadium into the best in Europe, hosting concerts for music’s biggest stars, NFL games and England even preferring to train at Hotspur Way rather than at St George’s Park, then you do it.

Tottenham have all of that in the palm of their hands. Everything off the pitch is tip-top.

It’s now about Ange Postecoglou delivering the goods on the field, because if the trophies follow, then they will be the near-perfect club in England.
