‘The interest is there’: Fabrizio Romano says Liverpool are really keen on £55m defender

Liverpool are looking to bring in a new centre-back this summer.

After the departure of Joel Matip and the emergence of Joe Gomez as more of a full-back option, Liverpool need defensive reinforcements.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Reds are already working on bringing in a new defender, and now, speaking on his YouTube channel, the journalist has named a defender that the Reds are very keen on.

Liverpool very keen on Goncalo Inacio

According to Romano, Liverpool are having a real look at signing Goncalo Inacio from Sporting.

“One of the players they appreciate and have been scouting is Goncalo Inacio from Sporting. He has a release clause in the region of €60m (£55m),” Romano said.

Inacio is being scouted and monitored by Liverpool and Man United. These two clubs are showing interest in Goncalo Inacio. Let’s see if they try to start the proper negotiation but the interest is there and the release clause is there.”

Liverpool deal makes sense

This is a deal that is right in Liverpool’s transfer wheelhouse.

Indeed, if you look at the type of business Liverpool have been doing recently, this ticks many of those boxes.

The Reds have exploited a number of release clauses in recent times with the likes of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai arriving in deals that came about after release clauses were triggered, while they also love to scour the Portuguese market.

Julian Ward has strong links to Portugal, hence his purchases of Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz during his last stint at the club, and now that Ward is back, that avenue to signing top talent from Portugal is back open.

When you add everything up, this looks like more and more of a logical signing for Liverpool, and it wouldn’t be much of a shock if the Reds did proceed with this one and get it over the line.
