General Election 2024: Boundary changes spell new constituency for some voters in North East Cambs and South West Norfolk

Thousands of constituents in our area will be voting in a different constituency come July 4 following a shake-up in the parliamentary boundaries across the country.

In Cambridgeshire not only have some boundaries changed but a new constituency has also been created.

In North East Cambridgeshire, currently represented by Conservative Steve Barclay, some villages have moved across the border into East Cambridgeshire.

While some villages that were previously in South West Norfolk, the seat of former Prime Minister Liz Truss, have moved across into neighbouring North West Norfolk.

The changes follow a national review to rebalance the number of people each MP represents.

Each constituency in the country, except for five, now represents between 69,724 and 77,062 electors.

The Eastern Region has been allocated 61 constituencies, an increase of three on the current number, and Cambridgeshire has one those, which covers St Neots and is named the St Neots and Mid Cambridgeshire Constituency.

The North East Cambridgeshire boundary change has seen Mepal, Littleport, Witcham, Sutton, Pymoor, Little Downham, and Coveney all move over the border into East Cambridgeshire.

Suggestions were made to get North East Cambridgeshire renamed Fenland Constituency. However, these were rejected by the Boundary Commission because it felt Fenland would be too unspecific, as the Fens covers a larger area than just the constituency.

Meanwhile, the part of Norfolk that adjoins Fenland has seen West Walton, Walsoken, Walpole Highway, Terrington St John, and Walton Highway, move from South West Norfolk into North West Norfolk.

Anyone wishing to check their constituency can find out on the UK Parliament website, or it will be on their poll card when it arrives.

They are incumbent Steve Barclay, who has represented the area for the Conservatives since May 2010, David Chalmers Liberal Democrats, Andrew Crawford Green Party, Michael Roberts Social Democratic Party, Christopher Thornhill for Reform UK, and Javeria Hussain for Labour.
