Exclusive: Ineos make decision about Bruno Fernandes's Manchester United future

HITC understands that as part of their season review, Manchester United’s hierarchy have also been discussing club captain Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes has proved crucial to United this season, which finished in fine style with the Portuguese lifting the FA Cup at Wembley as he helped them to a famous 2-1 win over rivals Manchester City.

Before the cup final, the 29-year-old spoke out publicly about United and his future at the club.

Fernandes insisted that he was not looking to leave Old Trafford, but also that he wants his ambitions to be met by the club’s new minority owners INEOS – who are now heading up footballing operations.

“A player always has to want to be here, but at the same time, you have to want him to stay. At the moment, I feel there’s that on both sides” Fernandes told DAZN.

“I want to be competitive, I want to compete, I want to win.”

HITC can confirm that Fernandes met with United in early May, in a meeting led by board member Sir Dave Brailsford and technical director Jason Wilcox.

It is understood that Fernandes made it clear he wants to stay and is open to signing a new contract, but he wants United to meet his ambitions. We are told that Wilcox outlined the club’s plans both short and long term.

Since then, Fernandes’s representatives are believed to have fielded enquiries from rivals including the Saudi Pro League, as well as Bayern Munich, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester United have no plans to let Bruno Fernandes leave

However, HITC is told that United have full confidence in Fernandes going forward and that has been underlined by talks during their end of season review.

The end of season review – which has included talks over Erik Ten Hag’s future – has also assessed the situation around their captain, and the conclusion from within the new footballing department is that they have very little appetite to lose Fernandes.

Indeed, HITC understands that during the review the club have decided that they will look at a new deal for Fernandes. His current deal is due to expire in 2026, with an option but they are willing reward him for his recent form with an improved deal.
