'On the move...': Journalist backs Sheffield Wednesday ace to leave this summer after latest transfer news

Journalist Dom Howson has now backed one Sheffield Wednesday player to leave the club this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday are in store for a summer of change, with plenty expected to arrive in S6 this summer.

Danny Rohl, after signing a new three-year contract as manager, looks set to overhaul the playing squad with new faces.

But there’ll also be a number of players leaving Hillsborough, with several having left already including the loan contingency, and the likes of Lee Gregory who’s since signed for Mansfield Town.

Rohl and co are still waiting on several names to decide whether or not they’re staying, with the likes of Josh Windass and Di’Shon Bernard both out of contract.

Both have interest from elsewhere but have offers to stay in S6, with goalkeeper Cameron Dawson also among those to be offered new terms.

But Howson now believes that Dawson could leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday set to sign Ben Hamer

It was recently revealed that Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign free agent goalkeeper Ben Hamer, following his release from Watford at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper will bolster the goalkeeping unit at Sheffield Wednesday with loan man James Beadle having left, and youngster Pierce Charles looking likely to head out on loan next season.

But Howson believes that Hamer’s arrival means Dawson is on his way out of the club after 11 years as a first-team player.

Howson says that Dawson ‘deserves to be playing regular first-team football’ and that Wednesday will potentially be in the market for another goalkeeper after Hamer, likely Beadle.

What next for Cameron Dawson at Sheffield Wednesday

The 2023/24 campaign was certainly a tough one for Dawson, who featured just 18 times in the Championship, keeping four clean sheets.

He was displaced by Beadle who proved to be a huge upgrade on the more experienced Dawson, with Beadle going on to claim eight clean sheets in 19 league appearances for the Owls.

But Dawson remains a vastly experienced goalkeeper with 129 total appearances for Wednesday under his belt and an impressive 47 clean sheets.

He’s shone in seasons before, and especially so during a loan spell with Exeter City during the 2021/22 campaign.

So there’ll be suitors out there for Dawson who, like Howson says, will struggle for game-time at Sheffield Wednesday next season, with Rohl surely wanting Beadle back, or wanting a new no.1 entirely.

After several years and plenty of ups and downs, it looks like Sheffield-born Dawson could finally be leaving the Owls this summer.
