Derby County must land ‘exceptional’ gem after turning down PL deal, he'd cost next to nothing - opinion

Derby County could land an ‘exceptional’ youngster for next to nothing following an update coming out of Manchester United.

Following promotion back to the Championship, Derby need to add sheer numbers to their roster.

In an ideal world, Paul Warne would have liked to keep the core of their promotion-winning squad but after the departures of six first-team players, the Rams boss needs improvements in every position.

Describing the Championship as the hardest he’s seen it in years, Warne needs quality reinforcements, particularly in attack.

Derby scored the joint-fewest goals of sides that finished in the play-offs (77) and with only James Collins and Conor Washington as realistic striking options, their struggles in the Championship would be amplified.

It’s no surprise they’re looking for attacking players in the window, and they should pinch one talented youngster from Manchester United.

Omari Forson could depart Man United

Omari Forson made his Manchester United debut against Wolves in February, coming off the bench to assist Kobbie Mainoo for his match-winning goal.

The world looked as though it was the teenager’s oyster, but just four months on from that day, Forson could be on his way out of Old Trafford.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the 19-year-old is set to leave the club as a free agent in June after failing to agree on a new contract.

It’s massive news as academy director Nick Cox claimed Forson showed “exceptional resilience” during his journey towards the first team, evincing that he isn’t just talented with the ball at his feet.

Omari Forson would resolve one issue for Derby County

Warne has touched on that he needs added pace and athleticism, especially in the final third, with Forson supplying that in abundance.

Capable of playing on both wings or centrally, the youngster possesses searing pace, upper body strength and power to dance past his opponents.

At times last season, Derby often lacked the skill and guile to unlock defences but Forson’s unpredictability would ensure that wouldn’t be an issue.

In the Championship, the Rams will get fewer chances to score and playing the teenager centrally or down the wing would make them a much bigger threat.

The 2004-born attacker has also drawn incredible praise from ex-Derby player Tom Huddlestone, who has compared him to Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka.

Speaking to SPORTbible, Huddlestone said: “He reminds me of the way Bukayo Saka plays.

“He’s good with both feet and can finish very well, especially with his left foot.”

This is huge praise from the 37-year-old as Saka is arguably one of the best youngsters on the planet, so a lot is expected of Forson.

It’s a huge shock to many that he could be leaving Old Trafford prematurely, but United’s loss would be another clubs gain this summer.
