If Leeds can't sign Joe Rodon, 49ers have to beat Everton for 'special' £15m man from local rivals - opinion

The chances are that Leeds United are not going to be able to call on Joe Rodon next season after the club failed to get promotion, but their nearby rivals Hull City might provide the answer.

Rodon, 26, has been sensational for Leeds over the last 12 months. But with Premier League clubs looking to sign the Wales star, the chances of Leeds getting him back on loan does seem incredibly unlikely.

That is despite Graeme Bailey telling LeedsUnited.News that Leeds will battle Premier League clubs for his signature. But if Leeds do miss out on the Tottenham man, then a replacement will be absolutely crucial.

There are many players on the market this summer and Euro 2024 will prove to be a scouting pool for many clubs. But the perfect alternative to Rodon resides within Yorkshire, currently over at Hull City.

Leeds should sign £15m-rated Hull star if they can’t get Rodon

Hull performed admirably under Liam Rosenior and were unlucky not to finish in the Championship play-offs. One key player for them, alongside former Leeds academy star Lewie Coyle, was Jacob Greaves.

The 23-year-old defender played every single minute of Hull’s Championship campaign when available, starting and finishing 43 games with the “special” defender suspended for the other three matches.

TalkSPORT claim that Burnley are pushing ahead with a move for the £15m-rated defender this summer, with West Ham and Everton also interested. But if Leeds can’t get Rodon, surely he would be next best.

Greaves picked ahead of Rodon in Championship Team of the Year

He was excellent, helping Hull keep 11 clean sheets and having a hand in six goals, captaining Hull in 10 of 43 games. He was picked ahead of Rodon in the Championship Team of the Year, alongside Ampadu.

While Greaves would be expensive in terms of transfer fee, it would only be a similar kind of figure to the one that would be required to sign Rodon. His wages at a club like Hull are not going to be excessive.

Given he was the Championship’s best central defender other than Ampadu according to the team of the year, surely Leeds have got to take a look at Greaves and deny Burnley the chance to land his signature.
