Report: Liverpool are pushing hard to sign midfielder who tackles even more than Wataru Endo

Liverpool did a lot of work on their midfield last summer, but the job isn’t finished yet.

Indeed, the Reds still need to find that long-term holding midfield option.

Wataru Endo was signed last summer, but at the age of 31 and with a lack of top-level experience, the Japan international generally isn’t thought to be the ultimate solution in that area.

However, now, Liverpool are said to have their eyes on one of the most promising young midfielders in Europe.

Liverpool pushing to sign Joao Neves

According to Record, Liverpool are among the teams pressing to sign Joao Neves this summer.

Unfortunately, the Reds aren’t alone in their interest in Neves.

Record also report that Manchester United have made an opening bid for Neves, while Manchester City are also said to be keen.

Of course, in these sorts of transfer tussles, Liverpool, historically, don’t come out on top, but there is reason to believe the Reds could get this deal done.

Liverpool could do Joao Neves deal

There’s reason to believe that Liverpool could be able to get this deal for Neves done.

Indeed, while the Reds aren’t historically the biggest of spenders, they do have cash to splash this summer.

Let’s not forget, the Reds made a £111m bid for Moises Caicedo this summer, and after that deal didn’t go through, the Merseyside club have healthy cash reserves to go out and spend on a player like Neves.

If Liverpool are to spend big on a midfielder this summer, Neves may well be the man for them.

Indeed, at the age of just 19, Neves is already a Portugal international who has been starring for Benfica, while the stats back up his brilliance in the defensive midfield role – averaging more tackles per game than Wataru Endo.

This is an exciting potential move, and it’s certainly one to keep an eye on.
