Report: 'One of the best midfielders in the world' now wants to join Aston Villa, £26m bid set to be made

A player who has been described as one of the best midfielders on the planet now wants to join Aston Villa.

Unai Emery has already seen his midfield department bolstered by the signing of Ross Barkley – who proved he is still a top talent during an impressive 2023/24 campaign at Luton Town.

There is also strong interest from Aston Villa in Chelsea No.23 Conor Gallagher – although a different midfielder is now keen on a move to Villa Park this summer…

Matteo Guendouzi wants to join Aston Villa

A story by Corriere dello Sport in Italy now claims that Matteo Guendouzi wants to join Aston Villa.

The Italian news outlet believe the France international has no intention of playing under Igor Tudor in Rome next season, and hopes to reunite with Emery in England.

As you may know, it was the Spaniard who helped to propel Guendouzi’s career back in July 2018 after bringing him to Arsenal in a £7m deal from Lorient.

It comes after a separate story from Corriere dello Sport claimed that a bid in the region of £26m is set to be made imminently by Aston Villa, and the Frenchman is keen for Lazio to accept the offer without causing any problems.

Guendouzi made 50 appearances for Lazio in the 2023/24 campaign – scoring three goals while also providing four assists.

Unai Emery could sign “one of the best midfielders in the world”

As aforesaid, Guendouzi has been described as “one of the best midfielders in the world” by Jorge Sampaoli – who coached him at Marseille.

The man born in Poissy has won eight caps for France amid a time where Didier Deschamps has some of the best midfielders on the planet at his disposal – such as Eduardo Camavinga, N’Golo Kante and Aurelien Tchouameni – so he is clearly viewed as an elite talent by those close to him.

Ultimately – whatever you think of Guendouzi – Emery is believed to be personally driving this transfer pursuit, and after guiding Aston Villa back into the UEFA Champions League, the Spaniard is entitled to have whatever he wants at Villa Park.
