Sheffield Wednesday star 'set to leave' ahead of contract expiry, he has 'interest elsewhere' - journalist

One Sheffield Wednesday player is now ‘looking set to leave’ the club, with his contract expiring this month.

Sheffield Wednesday are in store for a summer revamp under Danny Rohl, who looks set to clear the decks and lay the foundations for a much brighter future.

Every summer seems to ring the changes at Hillsborough. But fans will be hoping that this summer’s changes will be positive and long lasting.

We’ve already seen names like Lee Gregory move on to a new challenge, whilst there remains question marks over names like Di’Shon Bernard and Josh Windass who are both out of contract this summer.

The Owls have plenty of names on their transfer radars and look to be closing in on their first signing with free agent goalkeeper Ben Hamer tipped to join.

He’ll add experience and quality to a depleted goalkeeping unit in S6. But Hamer’s seemingly imminent arrival looks like it’s spell the end of Cameron Dawson at Sheffield Wednesday.

Cameron Dawson set to leave Sheffield Wednesday

The Sheffield-born goalkeeper is out of contract this month but was offered a new deal by the club, per their retained list.

He lost his place in the starting XI under Rohl who preferred James Beadle; the Owls are desperate to re-sign Beadle on loan from Brighton this summer.

With Beadle tipped to re-join and Hamer arriving, it casted doubt over Dawson’s future at the club, and now journalist Joe Crann has confirmed that the 28-year-old is set to leave this summer.

Crann posted on X that, ‘as things stand’, Dawson’s time at the club ‘will come to an end this summer’.

Crann adds that Dawson is ‘looking set to leave the Owls amid interest elsewhere’, though which clubs and in what leagues remains to be seen.

What level should Cameron Dawson play at after Sheffield Wednesday exit

Whoever signs Dawson this summer will be signing a very experienced goalkeeper; he has 129 total appearances for Sheffield Wednesday and has kept 47 clean sheets in that time.

He’s helped the Owls win promotion from League One and he’s shown glimpses of Championship quality in the past.

His 2023/24 campaign was certainly a struggle, with Dawson coming under fire for individual mistakes which led to goals being conceded.

But his loan spell with Exeter City during the 2021/22 League Two season might be a good indication of where he’s at right now.

He kept 19 clean sheets that season as the Grecians earned promotion. Having since played in League One and the Championship, he could return to League Two as a very good signing for a lot of top teams in that league.

Expect there to be plenty of League One suitors in for Dawson as well though, who will surely have no shortage of interest upon his Sheffield Wednesday exit.
