Report: Liverpool made a bid to sign £17m player just a matter of days ago, but he has now joined another club

Liverpool made an attempt to hijack a transfer 20 days ago – although the move has now failed.

Arne Slot has officially started work at Anfield after taking over from Jurgen Klopp, and the Dutchman is now working alongside Michael Edwards – CEO of Football at Liverpool – to improve the squad.

One area that Liverpool are looking to bolster is the goalkeeping department amid doubts over the futures of Alisson Becker and Caoimhin Kelleher – although the Reds have now failed with a bid to sign a new glovesman…

Liverpool fail with Michele Di Gregorio offer

A story from Tuttosport in Italy now claims that Liverpool made a very good offer to sign Michele Di Gregorio from Monza exactly 20 days ago – and even flew to Italy for talks.

The 26-year-old shone in the 2023/24 campaign when keeping 14 clean sheets in 33 Serie A appearances for Monza, conceding only 35 goals.

Tuttosport explain how Liverpool’s bid was more financially attractive to both Monza and Di Gregorio himself, although the Italian wanted to stay true to his word having already agreed to join Juventus.

That €20m (£17m) deal is now finalised, and the Old Lady will officially announce the Milan-born glovesman’s arrival imminently.

Tuttosport add that Liverpool saw Di Gregorio as the ideal successor to Alisson, who has received a significant offer from Saudi Arabia and is currently considering it.

The Italian news outlet believe Liverpool planned to have the Monza No.16 as a No.2 behind the Brazil international for the 2024/25 campaign, before promoting him to No.1 the following season.

Goalkeeping department has suddenly become uncertain for Arne Slot

Last term, the strength of Liverpool’s goalkeeping department was there for all to see, as Kelleher stepped in for the injured Alisson superbly at the beginning of 2024.

Virgil van Dijk even called the Republic of Ireland international a “world class” goalkeeper after he shone in the 1-0 Carabao Cup final win over Chelsea.

However, there is talk of Kelleher wanting to become No.1 elsewhere amid strong links to Celtic, which, coupled with Alisson’s lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia, means Adrian – who has just been offered a new deal – could arguably be described as the goalkeeper most likely to be at Anfield next season, as things stand.
