Sheffield Wednesday should swoop for 18-goal play-off loser if they can't sign Ugbo this summer - opinion

Sheffield Wednesday have already begun their pursuit of a new striker.

Sheffield Wednesday are approaching the summer transfer window, which opens as the Euros kicks off next week.

While Danny Rohl will be in Germany working as a pundit for ITV, the Owls will continue hunting for a new striker to bolster their struggling attack.

Wednesday claimed one of the lowest goal tallies last season, but were massively boosted by the loan arrival of Ike Ugbo in January.

After netting seven times, the club are eager to bring him back, but a return is looking increasingly unlikely.

Wednesday have already been linked with former target Mika Biereth again, but they are also likely to face fierce competition for his signature too.

While the Owls will be over the moon they avoided dropping down to League One, they should maybe consider snapping up a player who really impressed in the third tier last term.

Sheffield Wednesday should swoop for Devante Cole

While the Yorkshire outfit will need sign more than one striker to ensure quality and depth, one player they could consider is Devante Cole.

After picking up 16 goal contributions in the 2020-21 season for Motherwell, Cole earned himself a move to Championship club Barnsley.

The striker failed to impress in his first season, but has been on fire since their relegation.

Cole has bagged 33 goals and six assists across two campaigns in League One, making a key contribution as The Tykes reached back-to-back play-offs.

They were knocked out by Bolton in the semi-finals last month though, and as a a result, Cole was released at the end of his contract.

Free and available, the 29-year-old is likely to attract plenty of interest this summer. The forward has previously been linked with the likes of Middlesbrough and Swansea and Stoke, while Carlton Palmer expects there to be ‘a queue’ for his signature.

Can he enjoy a similar return in the Championship?

While not the most prolific in the Championship, Cole could really build on his success with Barnsley and enjoy a second crack at the league.

Both Ian Poveda and Ike Ugbo had struggled in the second tier before, but Danny Rohl got them firing and they made a real impact to the latter stages of the season.

It seems a win-win situation for the Owls. If he joins and scores goals, then it is a huge coup. If he struggles, then at least he didn’t cost a penny.

Though Cole may not be first-choice, but could prove to be great competition for whoever is brought on as the main man.
