‘Tricky’: Dom Howson explains why Sheffield Wednesday could really struggle to sign ‘fantastic’ player this summer

Sheffield Wednesday have now been warned that it could be very ‘tricky’ for them to re-sign Ike Ugbo.

Sheffield Wednesday are desperate to add some firepower to their team after Ike Ugbo’s loan spell ended, while Lee Gregory and Ashley Fletcher also left the club.

The Owls were one of the lowest scorers in the Championship last term and will need to significantly improve if they are to achieve the top half finish that Danny Rohl is hoping for.

Wednesday have so far been linked with a move for Mika Biereth, who they had attempted to sign on loan from Arsenal in January.

However, their focus still remains on bringing Ugbo back to the club after he netted seven goals in the second half of the season.

The Yorkshire outfit have already ‘initiated contact’ with Troyes over a potential deal for the striker, but will face fierce competition for his signature.

Sheffield Wednesday unlikely to sign Ike Ugbo

Journalist Dom Howson has now admitted that it could be very ‘tricky’ for Wednesday to land Ugbo.

He wrote on X: “Ugbo could be a tricky deal to get done. There will be competition for him and may depend on finances. Strikers are the most expensive players to sign and the toughest to pull off.”

Ugbo has already been linked to a number of clubs across the globe, while his impressive form is likely to bump up his price tag as Troyes look to cash in.

While Dejphon Chansiri is prepared to cough up some cash this summer, affording Ugbo could be a step too far.

The Owls could look elsewhere in North America

He is also heading to Copa America this month, meaning any ideal wouldn’t be able to cross the line until July.

With Wednesday’s desperation to find a new goalscorer, they can’t really afford to wait around.

Meanwhile, Duncan McGuire hasn’t been named in the USA squad, so could instead be an alternative to Ugbo.

The Owls worked their socks off to bring McGuire in back in January but failed, however it looks like he could still be on the move this time round.

The 23-year-old has netted five goals in 13 games for Orlando City so far this season.

Whoever Wednesday opt to chase, they are likely to face significant competition either way.

Rohl will have to hope that the temptation to play in England and work under one of the most promising coaches in the Championship can be enough to bring in someone impressive.
