Enzo Maresca wants Chelsea to sign Man City player who Pep Guardiola called 'extraordinary' - journalist

After seeing Cole Palmer’s success, Chelsea now want to sign another player from Manchester City.

The Blues have begun their new era with Enzo Maresca appointed as the club’s new head coach. He has replaced Mauricio Pochettino at the helm at Stamford Bridge.

All eyes will be on new signings once the transfer window opens, and Chelsea have now added a hugely talented Manchester City player to their list of targets.

The Blues, however, face some competition for his signature.

Manchester City’s stance after Chelsea eye move for Julian Alvarez

Chelsea are expected to be active on the transfer market again this summer.

The Blues have spent a lot of money since Todd Boehly took charge of the club. They aren’t really in a strong position with respect to PSR and FFP regulations, but they are still likely to make some big moves after selling a few players.

Chelsea signed Cole Palmer from Manchester City in 2023, and he was their best player by a distance in the recently concluded campaign.

Now, Maresca’s side are eyeing a move for another player from the Etihad – Julian Alvarez.

That’s according to Rudy Galetti, who has revealed that the Blues have added the World Cup winner to their list of targets ahead of the summer transfer window.

City, however, have absolutely no interest in letting the Argentine go, but Alvarez is desperate to play more next season.

Chelsea do face some competition for his signature – French champions Paris Saint-Germain, who have just lost Kylian Mbappe to Real Madrid, are also said to be interested in Alvarez.

Galetti tweeted: “PSG and Chelsea included Julian Alvarez on their list.

“Man City have no intention of selling him, while the ST is asking for more playing time. To date, there has been no official offer from Paris and CFC.”

Julian Alvarez’s stats for Manchester City will blow you away

The claim that Alvarez doesn’t get enough game time at Manchester City is not accurate at all.

The Argentine played 54 games in all competitions for the Premier League champions in the 2023/24 season – 39 of those came from the start.

That’s not bad at all for someone who is mostly viewed as a backup to the best striker in the country, Erling Haaland.

Alvarez’s numbers aren’t comparable to Haaland’s but they are still very, very impressive.

The World Cup winner scored 19 goals and provided 13 assists in all competitions last season. That’s 32 direct goal contributions in 39 starts, which is a truly incredible return.

Perhaps that’s why Pep Guardiola publicly branded him as an ‘extraordinary player’ back in January 2024 (TNT Sports).
