Report: Mauricio Pochettino thought £35m Chelsea player was too small to play

Chelsea look set to sell one of their defenders this summer, with his height reportedly a concern.

As things stand, Enzo Maresca has plenty of options for his defence.

In central defence, he has the likes of Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Levi Colwill, who can all play there.

In the full-back areas, Maresca has captain Reece James, Malo Gusto, Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell.

Ian Maatsen, who spent the second half of the season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, will also be a left-back option if he stays at Chelsea, although that looks unlikely.

Chelsea’s concerns about defender

Maatsen left Chelsea for Dortmund in the January transfer window to get more game time.

Under former manager Mauricio Pochettino, he made just one start in the Premier League.

His lack of minutes at Stamford Bridge this season may have been down to his height.

According to 90min, Pochettino had concerns about how short Maatsen was and those concerns still remain at the club.

The same outlet claims that the left-back has a £35m release clause in his contract and is expected to part ways with Chelsea this summer.

Ian Maatsen out, Tosin Adarabioyo in

While Maatsen looks to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge, Tosin Adarabioyo should be arriving soon.

Adarabioyo has reportedly turned down Premier League clubs such as West Ham United to join Chelsea this summer.

Next season, the central defender should help the Blues with their height issue.

Adarabioyo stands at 6ft 5in and has been really good in the air over the last year. As per FBref, the 26-year-old is in the 88th percentile for aerials won among his positional peers.

Maatsen barely played for Chelsea this term so cannot be blamed, but the Blues conceded too many times in the Premier League. In total, they let in 63 goals. With a taller defender like Adarabioyo in their side, maybe they will get better in that area.
