Border Force vessels, a Coastguard helicopter and lifeboats from Dover and Walmer are also said to have been dispatched after the Coastguard received reports of the incident.

As many as nine specialist ambulance vehicles were spotted heading towards the coast in Dover at about 8am.

There are concerns one person has been spotted drifting away from the rescue scene.

It is not clear how the migrant boat got into difficulties and those on board ended up in the water.

It is believed more than 250 more people are currently in boats on the French side of the Channel attempting to make the crossing today.

Emergency crews and rescue teams have been contacted for more information.
