Outrage over blasphemous remarks by non local student at GMC Srinagar

Srinagar:

The blasphemous remarks by a non local medical student of Government Medical College Srinagar on Wednesday has evoked a massive outrage with religious bodies and political leaders condemning the incident while reports of protests emerged from GMC Baramulla and NIT Srinagar.

Reports of NIT Srinagar students extending the peaceful protest against the incident of GMC Srinagar, where a student wrote a blasphemous post on a caller app, poured in while students of GMC Baramulla also strongly condemned the blasphemous Act by a student of GMC Srinagar

Condemnations continued to pour in. NC MP, Aga Ruhulla, said that it has “become a habit of some students in different institutions of Srinagar to post disrespectful contents about Prophet (SAW).” “The recent offence from a student in GMC Srinagar is a fresh example. These repeated offences cannot be tolerated in any civilised society. We give due respect to the religious figures of other religions and we expect the people of other religions to be equally civilised. The Srinagar administration should take immediate action and book this offender immediately under law. A mere suspension of the student is not enough.”

Several religious leaders have also condemned the incident, with calls growing for strict action against the student.

Meanwhile police said that they have registered a case and investigation has been started. A senior police officer said that police have taken cognizance of the incident of posting of sensitive content against religious sentiments of a particular community by one student of GMC Srinagar. “Upon receipt of communication from GMC Srinagar Administration a criminal case, FIR No. 13/24 u/s 153,153A, 295A, 505 (2)(b) IPC has been registered in PS Karan Nagar on 6th June 2024. Common public is appealed to desist from spreading rumours/false information, they shouldn’t fall prey to false propaganda of anti-social elements. Legal action shall be taken against those who are found to be involved in provocative act/instigation,” the officer added.
