Sheffield Wednesday 'nearing' new contract for key player after 'ambitious' Birmingham City interest - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly closing in on a new deal for one of their out of contract players.

Sheffield Wednesday have made a positive start to the post-season in terms of contracts.

Manager Danny Rohl has penned a new three-year deal, whilst veteran duo Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer have also signed contract extensions.

There’s still been some departures, though; Lee Gregory has left and joined Mansfield Town whilst Cameron Dawson has now been tipped to leave, with free agent goalkeeper Ben Hamer expected to arrive.

Elsewhere, Di’Shon Bernard remains out of contract in the summer and will technically become a free agent whilst away on international duty with Jamaica at Copa America this summer.

Josh Windass is also out of contract this summer; the striker scored in each of Sheffield Wednesday’s last three games of the season, scoring six league goals in 2023/24.

Sheffield Wednesday closing in on new contract for Josh Windass

Windass was offered a new Sheffield Wednesday contract at the end of last season, per the club’s retained list.

But the 30-year-old striker has had interest from elsewhere in the Championship, with all of Derby County, Hull City, Stoke City, and West Brom credited with an interest.

Now though, journalist Alex Miller has revealed on X that Windass and Sheffield Wednesday are ‘nearing agreement on new contract’.

Miller adds that League One new boys Birmingham City had ‘launched ambitious bid’ to sign Windass on a free transfer.

How long will Josh Windass stay at Sheffield Wednesday

The length of Windass’ proposed new Sheffield Wednesday contract remains unclear. But speaking on the Official EFL Podcast last month, Windass revealed that his representatives were in talks with Sheffield Wednesday over the next few years of his career.

That might suggest then that Windass will sign something of a longer-term deal at the club, which will help with avoiding another summer of numerous contract talks.

And it would also give Rohl a solid player to bed into the XI and start to build around; when fit and firing, Windass is one of the most clinical strikers in the Championship.

He showed that in the final weeks of the 2023/24 season with his goals once again playing a crucial role in the outcome of what eventually proved to be a very positive campaign.

If the Owls can now secure fresh terms for Bernard as well, it would make for a very strong start to the summer indeed.
