£21m man at risk: Five players who Newcastle could sell this month after Sky Sports' major PSR claim - opinion

Newcastle United reportedly have a major profit and sustainability problem that they need to address this month.

The Magpies may suddenly be under pressure to sell – and they need to do it before June 30th. That is when the next set of accounts are submitted to the Premier League to comply with profit and sustainability.

While Newcastle United have done all they can to increase their commercial revenue – including their new partnership with Adidas – there is still a need for the club to raise more money.

What has been reported about Newcastle United’s PSR position

That is according to Sky Sports, who report that Newcastle are one of six Premier League clubs that need to sell one or two players before the end of the month. The other clubs listed are Everton, Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa, Chelsea and Leicester City.

That means Newcastle need to move fast to move some players on, with the summer transfer window due to open on June 14th. There is also the added complication of this summer’s major tournaments, with some of Newcastle’s top stars set to compete at the Euros and the Copa America.

Whether or not that influences who Newcastle get rid of remains to be seen, but here are five Toon players that are now at risk of being sold this month.

Miguel Almiron

The most likely candidate to leave Newcastle United has to be Miguel Almiron. He is a player who the Magpies can afford to lose, with the club already looking for a replacement.

Geordie Boot Boys have been told that Almiron is likely to leave the club this summer, with teams in Saudi Arabia interested in signing him. He could even fetch a decent amount of money, with a fee of £25million suggested.

That would come as a huge surprise, but the 30-year-old is certainly at risk of being sold by Newcastle, five and a half years after his £21million arrival.

Callum Wilson

Another player who is considered likely to leave Newcastle United this summer is Callum Wilson.

He is 32-years-old and entering the final year of his contract, so a move away for the number nine makes sense – even if Eddie Howe is keen to keep him. The only complication is finding a replacement, which Howe stressed would cost a lot of money earlier this year.

However, Newcastle’s need to sell might speed up Wilson’s Toon departure.

Sean Longstaff

In terms of PSR, Sean Longstaff is a good player to sell. He is a product of Newcastle’s academy, meaning he would go down as pure profit if he was sold.

There is also the added issue of Longstaff’s contract, with his current deal expiring next year. The Magpies either need to hand him a new deal or sell this summer.

It would be sad to see the local lad go, but Eddie Howe is certainly not short of midfield options.

Kieran Trippier

With his contract expiring in 2025 and what happened during the January transfer window, there is a chance that Newcastle take this opportunity to move Kieran Trippier on.

It would be a blow, as he is a massively important player who has had a transformative impact at St James’ Park.

But given his situation, he has to be considered as a candidate to depart. Fortunately for Newcastle, they already have his replacement in Tino Livramento.

Bruno Guimaraes

Bruno Guimaraes is one player who Newcastle United do not want to sell, but Sky Sports’ claim regarding the Magpies’ PSR position certainly increases the fear that he could leave.

The 26-year-old currently has a window of opportunity to do just that, with potential suitors now having the chance to activate his £100million release clause.

That kind of money would certainly sort out Newcastle’s PSR issues, but it would be a damaging blow to Eddie Howe and his hopes of progressing next season.
