'Clear favourites': Club are way ahead of Chelsea in race to sign title-winning defender - Fabrizio Romano

Bayern Munich are reportedly leading Chelsea in the transfer race to sign a title-winning defender this summer.

Chelsea’s backline was a real weakness in their side last season, conceding 63 goals in the 38-game Premier League season. Therefore, it’s no major surprise to see the Blues linked with defenders.

The Daily Mail reports that Fulham centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo has been undergoing medicals on Tuesday ahead of an imminent move to Chelsea on a free transfer.

However, it’s been suggested elsewhere that the Blues may not be so fortunate in a different transfer pursuit.

Bayern Munich leading Chelsea in transfer race

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed via his YouTube channel that Bayern Munich are “clear favourites” ahead of Chelsea to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Jonathan Tah.

Tah, 27, is a talented central defender that played a key role for a Leverkusen side that just won the Bundesliga league title without losing a single match.

It is suggested that the German centre-half looks likely to join rivals Bayern this summer.

Romano has said: “He (Tah) has one year left on his contract at Bayer Leverkusen. He has a contract proposal from Bayer Leverkusen to continue there. What we can say is that we have many rumours from Chelsea, many rumours from Bayern.

“The information we get is Bayern are clear favourites in this race, more than Chelsea, way more than other English clubs interested in Jonathan Tah. Bayern really, really want to go and sign Jonathan Tah. They consider him as one of the priority targets.

“For sure, Bayern are favourites over Chelsea for Jonathan Tah.”

Jonathan Tah linked with Blues, but missing out on him isn’t a crisis

Of course, a defender with Tah’s experience and quality would be very welcome at Stamford Bridge. The German champion was a key cog in Leverkusen’s historical 2023/24 campaign.

Journalist Christian Falk has recently claimed via Substack that Chelsea do have an interest in signing Tah.

But if Chelsea do miss out on the Bayern target, they still own several quality centre-backs, plus Adarabioyo may be on his way to bolster the depth.

The Chelsea Chronicle would love to see a brand new combination of Levi Colwill and Wesley Fofana start in the heart of defence next season.
