'Demoralising': Don Hutchison says one rule 'doesn't seem right' after news about Newcastle today

Newcastle United might have a busy few weeks on the horizon.

With the transfer window due to officially open, Toon fans are excited to see who the club might sign ahead of next season. It looks like Lloyd Kelly will be the first through the door, as Newcastle United close in on bringing the 25-year-old to St James’ Park.

However, Eddie Howe might now have to turn his attention to outgoings.

That is because of a story from Sky Sports, who claim that Newcastle United are one of six Premier League clubs that are under pressure to sell one or two players due to profit and sustainability.

The Magpies need to increase their revenue by June 30th, which means they need to sell someone before the end of month. That raises questions over who could depart, at a time when Bruno Guimaraes’ £100million release clause is very much active.

That would be the worst case scenario, with other contenders to leave including Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron.

Pundit reacts to Newcastle needing to sell due to PSR

Regardless, Newcastle continue to be held back financially. Despite having incredibly wealthy owners, the club are not allowed to splash the cash. The rules are stopping Newcastle from progressing at the rate they want to, while they are also hurting a club like Aston Villa, who are trying to challenge the Premier League’s elite alongside the Magpies.

They are another Premier League club that reportedly needs to sell, alongside Chelsea, Everton, Leicester City and Nottingham Forest.

It could lead to a wild few weeks with regards to transfers, and it is a situation that pundit Don Hutchison is not happy about.

He has taken to X to deliver his verdict on Sky Sports’ PSR update, and does not believe it is fair on the fans of clubs like Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Hutchison wrote: “Newcastle Everton Chelsea Forest Villa Leicester will all have to sell players in the summer. How demoralising is that for fans, thinking their club can kick on in the summer. I gotta say this PSR law doesn’t seem right to me.”

PSR is holding clubs like Newcastle back

While PSR does serve a purpose of stopping clubs spending beyond their means, it is currently being exposed.

So many clubs are struggling to comply, with teams only allowed to make a loss of £105million over a three year period. That figure should have increased with inflation, given the price of players nowadays.

For the elite, it is not an issue. They make so much from sponsorship deals and other avenues that their revenue is through the roof. Yet is much harder for clubs like Newcastle and Aston Villa, who want to be challenging at the top – and have proven they can over the past couple of years.

As Hutchison says, the rule is not right, but Newcastle might need to move fast to stay the right side of it.
