Rangers-linked defender axed as 33-cap international, Clement could cash in

Home-grown players, or those eligible to meet UEFA’s quota for Rangers, must be considered in this transfer window.

Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen have a big enough task as it is, however, the shortage of Scots in the squad is a real issue.

The academy is capable of providing backup options and filling in the gaps, but with only a few senior players who meet the criteria, Rangers will be considering someone who has just been released from the Premier League.

Scott McKenna released as Rangers look for local talent

Rangers aren’t quite at the stage of being beggars, Koppen and Clement can’t be particularly choosey either though.

Kenny McLean’s name has been doing the rounds on social media and Stuart Armstrong could be a controversial Bosman option, but both players are 32-years old.

There was a lot of experience that left midfield in Ryan Jack and John Lundstram which makes it more understandable if they are being considered.

It is in defence where Rangers can make a clever move and free up some money.

Leon Balogun has extended his stay, Jefte has already been confirmed and there have Bosman move for Scott McKenna makes a lot of sense.

Rangers fans are fully aware of his alleged allegiances but you only have to look across the city and at Greg Taylor to see that this is irrelevant for professionals of a certain standard.

They can’t all be tarred with the same brush as Michael O’Halloran.

McKenna would take Rangers defence back to basics

One of the complaints angled at Rangers defence at times this season has been that it has been too lightweight.

McKenna, with 33-international caps, is anything but lightweight.

In Nottingham Forest’s first season back in the Premier League, they were comfortable in mid-table due mainly to the foundation that the defence gave them.

Ironically, his main partner was former Ibrox loanee Joe Worrall.

Their defence hasn’t been anywhere near as consistent since signing ‘better’ and more expensive players.

After being released by Forest, McKenna won’t be short of options as he looks to play for Scotland at the upcoming European Championships.

He’s not exactly known for his ball carrying skills, however, he doesn’t need to be if his partner is and he has a left-back and central midfielder offering themselves.

Rangers simply can’t turn their nose up at a player like Scott McKenna when there is the option to turn the transfer into profit.

Ben Davies was outstanding in his late run in the team but it doesn’t look like he has a future at the club and could easily bring in a few million pounds.

Money that could be spent elsewhere and where it is needed most.
