Eight Manchester United players at Euro 2024 and all group stage fixtures, kick-off times

Manchester United players have experienced mixed news in preparation for Euro 2024, after a tough campaign at club level.

The likes of Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho were never in the running. Marcus Rashford was then left out of the squad, with Gareth Southgate saying other England players had better seasons.

Harry Maguire missed out due to a late season injury, while Tyrell Malacia, who made the Dutch World Cup squad, missed out due to injury, and Donny van de Beek due to form.

There are no France internationals either, outgoing star Raphael Varane retired from international duty last year, while Anthony Martial is long-forgotten by manager Didier Deschamps, amid his injury battles.

In total only eight Manchester United players have made the Euro 2024 squad. Here is a look at the players who did make it.

Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw – England

  • Sunday June 16: Serbia v England – Arena AufSchalke, Gelsenkirchen kick-off 8pm UK time
  • Thursday June 20: Denmark v England – Waldstadion, Frankfurt,kick-off 5pm UK time
  • Tuesday June 25: England v Slovenia – RheinEnergieStadion, Cologne – kick-off 8pm UK time

Kobbie Mainoo is Manchester United’s find of the season. He ended up being fast-tracked from England’s under-19s to the senior squad, after making his Three Lions debut in the March friendlies.

The second England player to make the squad is Luke Shaw, who has been battling injuries all season. He may not be fit enough to start England’s first game, but with the team hopeful of going far at the tournament, Southgate hopes he will be able to make an impact.

England’s ambitions are to go all the way, a big ask, but after making the Euro 2020 final, there are high hopes for a country which always believes.

Scott McTominay – Scotland

  • Friday June 14: Germany v Scotland – Allianz Arena, kick-off 8pm UK time
  • Wednesday June 19: Scotland v Switzerland – RheinEnergieStadion, kick-off 8pm UK time
  • Sunday June 23: Scotland v Hungary – MHPArena, kick-off 8pm UK time

Scott McTominay was one of the stars of Euro 2024 qualifying, scoring seven goals, including a matchwinning brace against Spain.

He is coming off his best ever club season, with 10 goals, and will feature in the opening game of the tournament with Scotland trying to spring an upset against rejuvenated hosts Germany.

Scotland will feel they have a fair chance of getting out of the group, which would constitute success, and McTominay’s goals will be key.

Rasmus Hojlund, Christian Eriksen – Denmark

  • Sunday June 16: Slovenia v Denmark – MHPArena, kick-off 5pm UK time
  • Thursday June 20: Denmark v England – Waldstadion, Frankfurt, kick-off 5pm UK time
  • Thursday June 25: Denmark v Serbia – Allianz Arena, kick-off 5pm UK time

Rasmus Hojlund has just come through a challenging first season, ending as Manchester United’s top scorer with 16 goals. He is Denmark’s first choice striker and has a fascinating Euro 2024 schedule.

His first match sees him up against Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko, while he then takes on some familiar faces with England in their second match.

Don’t rule out some magic from Christian Eriksen despite a slow club season. He scored a spectacular winner in a warm-up friendly at the start of June.

Denmark’s initial objective will be to get out of the group, and then simply try to go as far as possible. Whether they can reach the semi-finals, as they did at Euro 2020, is a big ask.

Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes – Portugal

  • Tuesday June 18: Portugal v Czech Republic – Red Bull Arena, kick-off 8pm UK time
  • Saturday June 22: Turkey v Portugal – Signal Iduna Park, kick-off 5pm UK time
  • Wednesday June 26: Georgia v Portugal – Veltins Arena, kick-off 8pm UK time

Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes are going to Euro 2020 to win, anything less will feel like a failure for Portugal, who won 10 qualifiers from 10 matches.

This is a Portugal side still boasting Cristiano Ronaldo, with coach Roberto Martinez blending old and new, with Fernandes the key cog in midfield.

Don’t be surprised if Portugal cruise through qualifying with three wins. But as they discovered at the World Cup, all it takes is one off-day in the knockout rounds, and it’s all over.

Altay Bayindir – Turkey

  • Tuesday June 18: Turkey v Georgia – Signal Iduna Park, kick-off 5pm UK time
  • Saturday June 22: Turkey v Portugal – Signal Iduna Park, kick-off 5pm UK time
  • Wednesday June 26: Czech Republic v Turkey – Volksparkstadion, kick-off 8pm UK time

Manchester United’s back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is battling Ugurcan Cakir for the Turkey number one jersey.

Bayindir has featured in a friendly win over Germany this season and kept a clean sheet in a draw with Italy more recently.

Little is expected from Turkey after a poor Euro 2020, but they have a chance to get out of their group.
