Derby County transfer target now 'nearing agreement' with Championship rivals - journalist

Derby County now look set to miss out on another summer transfer target.

Derby County have endured quite a slow start to the post-season, with no news of imminent arrivals at Pride Park ahead of the Rams’ Championship return.

There’s little going on in the Championship in general, but Derby County are one of the teams that really need to prepare for what’ll be a tough second tier campaign.

Following promotion from League One, many will tip Paul Warne’s side to struggle near the foot of the table next season.

New signings are certainly needed, and right across the pitch with the Rams losing a bit of quality ahead of contracts expiring at the end of this month.

One name linked, but who has since sealed a move elsewhere is Viktor Johansson; he’s now signed for Stoke City.

Another name now looks set to fall through Derby County’s grasp; Josh Windass.

Josh Windass set to sign new Sheffield Wednesday contract

Derby County have been credited with an interest in Sheffield Wednesday striker Josh Windass, who sees his current deal expire at the end of this month.

The Rams, along with Hull City, Stoke City, and West Brom, were said to be keeping an eye on the 30-year-old’s situation, following his impressive end to the 2023/24 campaign.

Windass scored three in each of Sheffield Wednesday’s last three games as the Owls beat the drop in the Championship.

But journalist Alex Miller says that Windass and Sheffield Wednesday are ‘nearing’ an agreement over a new deal, although it’s not yet finalised.

Can Derby County still sign Josh Windass

Windass is a well-liked name at Sheffield Wednesday, and he’s previously spoken about his desire to become one of the club’s leading scorers with 40 goals to his name so far.

Him staying at Hillsborough always seemed like the likeliest outcome this summer, especially so after Owls boss Danny Rohl penned a new contract.

And now, this latest update from Miller should just about bring an end to any Derby County hopes of a deal for Windass this summer.

But he’s certainly the type of striker that Warne should be targeting this summer; Championship-experienced and prolific, albeit somewhat injury prone.

There may be better options out there and Warne needs to be on his toes ahead of contracts expiring at the end of this month, with the best free agents surely set to be snapped up immediately.

Expect the Rams to have a long list of transfer targets, though it’ll be another desperate race to bring them in.
