Latest interest in Mason Greenwood could give Manchester United upper hand in desire to sign £85m talent - Opinion

One of the Manchester United players attracting heavy interest this summer is Mason Greenwood, now a new club have joined the race.

With all the transfer rumours circling Manchester United this summer, it was always expected that some sales were needed in order to supplement the spending and keep the club within PSR regulations.

Already a massive amount of wages has been freed up, with Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial both let go as their contracts came to an end, saving a whopping £590k-a-week in space in the wage budget.

These exits are likely to be added to with several senior players attracting interest, with Ineos also keen to sell, such as Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelof, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood.

The final name on this list is Greenwood, who spent the last season on loan with Getafe where he has gained countless admirers due to his terrific performances. Now yet another side has been linked with interest, and this club’s keenness could open some interesting options.

Benfica now show interest in Mason Greenwood

As the race to sign Mason Greenwood heats up this summer, Manchester United will be delighted to see the interest continuing to grow.

Now, according to a report from the Portuguese outlet Record, Benfica has joined the race to sign Greenwood in a move which would be exciting for multiple reasons.

Benfica are said to regard Greenwood as one of the best talents in Europe and sports director Rui Pedro Braz has already met with the player according to the report to sell him on the idea of a move to Portugal.

For Greenwood, a move to Benfica may be a smart one considering the reputation held by the club in developing young players into world beaters. Which is something that the 22-year-old seems destined to become.

But Benfica’s interest will also be encouraging to United and Ineos, as it could give the club an upper hand in a bid to sign one of their own top targets this summer.

Benfica’s Greenwood interest could make Joao Neves moves more feasible

Benfica having an interest in any United player is good news for the club as it gives Ineos some bargaining tools in a bid to sign Joao Neves this summer, with the 19-year-old thought to be high on the list.

The club’s desire to sign Neves has already been made clear this summer, with a bid being submitted and rejected for the teenage talent.

United are reported to have offered £51m for Neves, while Benfica are demanding at least £85m, which is still below the release clause he has in his contract.

But with Greenwood’s value of at least £40m, a deal could potentially be done, with United buying Neves and a Greenwood sale offsetting it with £40m+ of pure profit on the books.
