Report: 'Elusive' player who Newcastle have discussed signing will cost them at least £60m this summer

Newcastle United have discussed making some very exciting signings this summer, but they will not come cheap.

The Magpies are looking for players who can take them to the next level, and will once again go in search of Champions League qualification next season after missing out on Europe altogether.

To do that, Eddie Howe needs a sprinkling of quality – particularly in the final third. The club have discussed moves for the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Michael Olise, but the feeling is that they will both be too expensive. On top of that, the lack of Champions League football might mean a move for Olise is a non-starter.

Newcastle United have discussed signing Eberechi Eze

Another player who Newcastle have discussed signing is Olise’s Crystal Palace teammate Eberechi Eze, who is set to represent England at Euro 2024 alongside Toon players Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier.

Steve Bruce recently claimed that he tried to sign Eze when he was Newcastle United manager, and now the Magpies are once again being linked with the 25-year-old.

Eze dazzled Newcastle fans earlier this week when he represented England at St James’ Park, with lots of supporters wishing they could watch the ‘elusive‘ attacker on a regular basis.

How much Eberechi Eze will cost this summer

But for that to happen, the Newcastle United owners will have to dig deep into their pockets.

That is because a new report from the Daily Mail has provided details on a release clause in Eze’s contract, sharing how much suitors like Newcastle will need to spend to sign the England international.

The Daily Mail report that Eze’s contract includes a release clause worth £60million. On top of that, there could also be an additional £8million in add-ons.

That would take the fee to £68million in total, which is more than what the Magpies spent on Alexander Isak two years ago. He cost £63million from Real Sociedad, which was the most expensive transfer in Newcastle’s history.

Eze to Newcastle is an unlikely dream this summer

With at least £60million required to get Eze away from Selhurst Park, it is difficult to envision him moving to St James’ Park.

Newcastle obviously want a marquee signing this summer, but it would be a surprise if it was Eze.

The bulk of the Magpies’ budget is expected to go on a right winger, which Eze is not. The only way a move would make sense was if Eddie Howe was planning to move Gordon to the right to allow Eze to play on the left.

While he is an immensely talented player, it does not feel likely that Eze will be on his way to Tyneside ahead of next season.
