Actress never knew mom was famous until primary school - but then kept her identity a secret

Celebrity Gogglebox duo, Beattie Edmondson and Jennifer Saunders, are the mother-daughter pair joining fellow celebrities on their sofa. Beattie is no stranger to cameras, as she’s an actress herself.

Having grown up under her famous mom’s wing, Gogglebox‘s Beattie followed in her footsteps and became a TV actress in 2008. But she never knew Jennifer was famous until she went to primary school.

Beattie and Jennifer excite Gogglebox fans

Beattie Edmondson and Jennifer Saunders are confirmed for the new Celebrity Gogglebox season. Back in November 2023, the mom-daughter duo briefly appeared on SUTC Gogglebox for a guest appearance.

Most TV fans will know Beattie for her role in the likes of sitcoms like JOSH and Fresh Meat, while Jennifer is a member of The Comic Strip, which rose to fame in the 80s, with her best friend, Dawn French.

One fan commented on the news, “Can’t wait to hear what Jennifer Saunders has to say 🥰,” while former Big Brother star, Jordan Sangha, simply wrote, “Jennifer Saunders 😍.”

Actress never knew mom was famous

While Beattie often laughs at being compared to Saffy from TV show, Absolutely Fabulous, she told Standard she didn’t even know her mother was famous until she went to primary school.

When pupils asked about her mom, she went home that afternoon and enquired: “Are you Jennifer Saunders?” Although she “never had a dream to become a comedian,” her mom “must have” inspired her.

“I need people to organise me and then life happens. Forming Lady Garden was mainly all my friend Eleanor Thom’s idea. We all got the call from her, like in Charlie’s Angels,” Edmondson added.

Edmonson kept mom’s identity secret

Beattie kept her mom’s identity a secret when she met people at university. “Then they came to visit me, which might have been a giveaway. But once my friends knew, it wasn’t a big deal,” she revealed.

She joked how her “mum can’t be accused of nepotism” because Saunders didn’t write a part for her daughter in her show, Absolutely Fabulous, which Beattie “didn’t mind”.
