'Keep an eye': Newcastle could make move to sign £24m player in England's Euro 2024 squad

Newcastle United’s goalkeeping situation is very much up in the air right now, with a deal for Giorgi Mamardashvili seemingly being ruled out.

There were recently claims that the Magpies had made a £35million bid for the Valencia goalkeeper, but they appear to have been dismissed following suggestions that Newcastle United believe that the 23-year-old is too expensive.

That could lead them towards James Trafford, who is available for £20million following Burnley’s relegation to the Championship.

He would be a less popular arrival at St James’ Park, and a move for the 21-year-old would definitely mean that Nick Pope remains Newcastle’s number one.

Burnley need to sell as Newcastle target James Trafford

That is the view of HITC Football insider Graeme Bailey, who has spoke to Geordie Boot Boys about James Trafford’s Burnley future amid interest from Newcastle.

“Burnley need to raise cash, that is an issue for them,” he said.

“James Trafford is one who could be available.

“If Newcastle sign Trafford, they are signing a pure number two.”

Don’t rule out Aaron Ramsdale to Newcastle United just yet

A Toon move for Trafford would split opinion on Tyneside, but Bailey believes there is someone else who could arrive at St James’ Park.

Aaron Ramsdale, who is part of the England squad for Euro 2024, is also a target, and Bailey has told Geordie Boot Boys not to rule out the England international joining the Magpies from Arsenal.

“I still would not rule out Aaron Ramsdale at this stage.

“Newcastle have proven that they have got other options. Does that bring Ramsdale’s price down? Possibly. Arsenal do not want to be left with Ramsdale given his wages and his desire to leave.

“I think we will see a goalkeeper arrive at Newcastle. Mamardashvili is one they like, but they are not paying £40million for him. I find it hard to see them paying £20million for a number two in Trafford.

“We will see how this plays out, but I would keep an eye on the Ramsdale situation.”

It will all depend on price with Ramsdale

Talk of Ramsdale moving to Newcastle United has gone very quiet. At one point, it looked like he was the most likely candidate to join Eddie Howe’s side, now that honour seems to belong to James Trafford.

But Ramsdale is surely certain to leave Arsenal this summer, and it was recently reported that Newcastle are willing to spend £15million on him.

It would be a huge surprise if Arsenal were willing to sell for that amount, having spent £24million on him in 2021. But it might depend on how desperate they are to get rid and how many other suitors he has. If Newcastle are the only interested party then perhaps they could grab a bargain…

As is the case with all transfers, Newcastle’s goalkeeper hunt will simply come down to money. Mamardashvili is going to be too expensive, but it remains to be seen if that will be the case for Trafford or Ramsdale.
