Mali under-23s called up Traore for their friendly fixtures against Uzbekistan.

The 22-year-old performed as a destructive midfielder under Gary O’Neil at Wolves, but he’s unleashed further forward for his nation.

Their 1-1 draw against Uzbekistan proved to be a masterstroke as Traore scored a thunderbolt from range and received widespread praise from Wolves supporters.

One supporter said: “We’ve got some player on our hands there, hopefully comes to fruition more next season.”

Another added: “Big player next season.”

A third said: “I need him to do this at wolves. A screamer is literally calling his name with his Wolves shirt.”

Another fan said: “He’s been waiting for that one.”

A sixth joined in: “I’ve not made my mind up with him! Maybe he’s not playing in his favourite position or being told by GON. Hopefully has a good season.”

Gary O’Neil can unleash Boubacar Traore further forward

Traore made seven starts for Wolves in the Premier League last term and he was predominantly used as a defensive screen in front of the back three.

Although he did that job superbly well, ranking in the top 1% of midfielders across Europe for tackles, O’Neil could be tempted to unleash him further forward.

Wolves were the only side from the top five domestic leagues in Europe to not score a goal outside the penalty area however, Traore’s screamer for Mali shows he’s got that in the locker.

The midfield titan demonstrated on several occasions that he isn’t afraid to have a pop from range, and although it didn’t pay off at Molineux, it has on international duty.

O’Neil has an exciting player on his hands in Traore, someone exceptional at winning the ball back but equally talented going forward, with supporters clamouring to see that talent in 2024/25.
