O’Neil must fulfil transfer wish in Wolves move for ‘phenomenal’ player likened to Trezeguet - opinion

Gary O’Neil’s striker conundrum can be resolved this summer by capturing a “phenomenal” player likened to France icon David Trezeguet.

Gary O’Neil impressed in his first season at Molineux, navigating Wolves to a 14th-place finish with a very limited squad to choose from.

The Wanderers boss was lacking in multiple areas, particularly at striker, where the 41-year-old will look to strengthen this summer.

Wolves are currently in a tussle to land Southampton striker Che Adams and although they may land the Scottish international, there are plenty of other options in the market.

One player they should target is out of favour at his current club however, he was once one of the most lethal strikers on the planet.

Sebastien Haller’s record at Dortmund

Sebastien Haller was once one of the most feared strikers in Europe.

During his time at Dutch giants Ajax, the lethal Ivorian had a campaign to remember in 2021/22 as he finished behind only Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski in the Champions League scoring charts with 11.

The former West Ham striker joined Borussia Dortmund for £26 million in the summer of 2022 on the back of his impressive campaign.

Haller was then unfortunately told he had cancer just weeks after joining Dortmund but following two surgeries and various rounds of chemotherapy, the 29-year-old returned with a bang by scoring in a 5-1 demolition of Freiburg in February 2023.

That was one of nine goals he scored in 19 appearances during the 2022/23 season, though injuries and preferring to start Niclas Fullkrug saw the 25-cap Ivorian score just three goals in all competitions last term.

Why Sebastian Haller can fix striker problem for Gary O’Neil

Dortmund are reportedly interested in signing Stuttgart goal machine Serhou Guirassy, which would push Haller down the pecking order and tempt him to move back to the Premier League.

At Molineux, the towering striker could thrive having shown his goal-scoring prowess across Europe with an exceptional 165 domestic goals in 393 appearances, via Transfermarkt.

A physical presence in the penalty box with a powerful shot to match, Haller has been likened to France icon David Trezeguet due to his stature and ability to use both feet.

The ex-Ajax striker may have failed during a spell at West Ham however, O’Neil’s ability to get the best out of a player could see him truly thrive.

Wolves created a lot of chances last term through the quality of Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-Chan but having that duo floating in behind Haller would be a nightmare for defenders.

Combining the Ivorian’s physicality with the speed and agility of Cunha and Hwang sounds lethal on paper, and O’Neil can make it a reality by poaching the “phenomenal” striker from Dortmund.
