Bhoys talent adds to the argument for Celtic position change with international impact

Bosun Lawal continues to attract attention ahead of his Celtic pre-season assessment, playing a prominent role for the Republic of Ireland U21s in a victory away to their Croatia counterparts.

Lawal left the Bhoys as a central defender but, midway through his season-long loan to Fleetwood Town, transitioned into playing as a midfielder.

He featured 21 times in that role and won plaudits for his form despite their relegation to English League Two, also netting five goals.

He performed in midfield again for the Ireland U21s on Friday and produced a quality through ball for Aidomo Emakhu to score in an impressive 3-2 win.

Lawal surged forward in the middle of the park and threaded a pass ahead of Emakhu, who promptly rounded the keeper and coolly finished.

Bosun Lawal has a big summer ahead at Celtic

Celtic will be taking a close look at Lawal in pre-season before determining whether he is best served heading out on loan again.

Back in March, Lawal indicated he wanted to fight for a future at the Bhoys, stating: “Celtic are a big club and came in for me so I was interested straight away. I just want to progress and hopefully break into the first team to make a name for myself and my family.

“The contract was a big boost. I had been doing well in the academy and training with the first team but I felt like it was time for me to get out and get good first-team experience.

“Celtic are happy with the progress I’m making. The reason Celtic sent me out on loan was to play games, learn and hopefully come back ready to play for the first team. I’m enjoying it right now and just thankful it’s all coming together.”

Lawal signed a new deal with the Bhoys in 2023, before his loan departure. He is committed to the club until the summer of 2026.
