Unai Emery now told asking price for ‘magic’ Aston Villa target, compared to Lionel Messi

Aston Villa are gearing up for a busy summer transfer window and Unai Emery has been told the asking price of a ‘magic’ target who has been compared to Lionel Messi.

The transfer window opens on June 14th and Aston Villa have already been linked to several players.

Although the Villans are hamstrung by PSR concerns, Monchi and Unai Emery are still hard at work unearthing some of Europe’s most promising talents.

It’s a pivotal summer for Villa as they prepare for the Champions League in 2024/25, with multiple areas needing improvements, including at centre-back, left-back, central midfield and winger.

The last of those positions has seen Aston Villa draw regular links to Juventus winger Matias Soule, with the Italian giants now naming their asking price for the 21-year-old.

Villa have been told they must sell one of their prized assets before they can spend this summer to avoid breaching PSR.

Douglas Luiz is the player attracting most interest from several European clubs, including Juventus, who have mooted a deal involving Soule and midfielder Weston McKennie.

Villa would love to keep their Brazilian maestro, although reports have suggested he wants to leave and it remains to be seen whether Monchi would entertain any offers.

In the other direction, Sportitalia – as relayed by Football Italia – have reported that the Italian giants have set a €40 million (£34 million) asking price for Soule as Borussia Dortmund, Brighton and Bayer Leverkusen all show interest in the Argentine.

The report claims Soule is likely to be sold by Juventus this summer to raise funds for other purchases, such as Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

Where Matias Soule would fit in at Aston Villa

Soule was loaned out to Serie A side Frosinone in 2023/24 and the Argentina under-23 international showcased his talent with 11 goals in 36 appearances.

The fleet-footed forward is a sought-after youngster as he’s capable of playing across multiple positions, often hugging the right-hand touchline or operating as a second striker.

Leon Bailey’s position is cemented on the right flank, though Ollie Watkins could do with some extra support and Soule could provide that.

Diminutive in frame like the great Lionel Messi, Soule has drawn comparisons to his fellow countryman as he’s excellent at gliding past his opponents and using his quick feet to draw fouls or evade tight spaces.

As highlighted by FBref, the Juventus forward is great at beating his man and creating chances, with the Argentine ranking in the top 10% of Europe’s attackers for successful take-ons and shot-creating actions.

These qualities are a fundamental part of his game and for £34 million, Villa would be getting a versatile forward ready to wreak ‘magic’ in the Champions League.
