Crimson Countdown: No. 83 Major Melson

Major Melson (83) runs drills during OU football practice in Norman, Okla., on Monday, Aug. 14, 2023.

The Crimson Countdown is officially on for the 2024 Oklahoma football season. Fans have been waiting for what feels like forever with this one. The Sooners are finally and officially joining the SEC.

The 2023 season was a rebound one for head coach Brent Venables, getting the program back to its standard. OU went 10-3 in Venables’ second season, now it’s time for year No. 3.

Every day as we get closer to kickoff, SoonerScoop.com will count down the days with you. Starting with No. 99 and working our way to No. 0, we’ll be there every step of the way.

Crimson Countdown: No. 83 Major Melson

2023 stats: N/A

2024 outlook:

Melson enters his final year as a Sooners player coming off his first year with getting on the field. The second generation Oklahoma player saw the field against Arkansas State and Tulsa early in the 2023 season. That sort of activity may well match his expectations for the 2024 season. Melson has been fully bought in from arrival and the Sooners will undoubtedly try and reward his work whenever possible.

2024 Wide Receiver Outlook

There’s no offensive position with more depth than wide receiver. While the Sooners lose leading receiver Drake Stoops to the NFL, they return everyone else. Jalil Farooq and Andrel Anthony are both back, but both missed most of the spring with injuries. Nic Anderson, who led the team in touchdowns last season, is also back. And Jayden Gibson looks to have a bigger role next year after a strong spring. But the X factor for the Sooners might be Purdue transfer Deion Burks, who showed everyone he might be the best weapon OU has during the Spring Game.
