'He is powerful, he is quick': Joe Cole says Newcastle have a player in their ranks he absolutely loves

Newcastle United endured a somewhat underwhelming season in 2023/24 as they failed to build on their fourth-placed finished in 2022/23.

The Magpies have a busy summer ahead of them as they look to bolster their ranks, but at the same time they’ll have to be mindful of profit and sustainability rules.

However, there was one particular positive last season as one of Newcastle’s young rising stars well and truly came to the fore in the Premier League.

Anthony Gordon registered double figures for both goals and assists in the English top flight as he went from exciting talent to bona fide Premier League superstar.

The 23-year-old Magpies man’s efforts saw him make the cut for the England team that will compete at Euro 2024 and is among the favourites to lift the trophy.

Gordon was unavailable for England’s first pre-tournament friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina due to injury, but featured in the follow-up match against Iceland.

Ahead of Friday’s game, Joe Cole spoke on Channel 4 about the Newcastle forward’s qualities and efforts.

What did Joe Cole say about Newcastle and England ace Anthony Gordon?

“He is very direct,” said Cole (Channel 4, 7/6/2024, 19:08). “I love Anthony Gordon.

“I played that position for England. He is powerful, he is quick, he is direct, he is fearless, but he has got a nice humility about him.

“He loves football. We saw him come off the pitch the other night when he made his debut, and you saw such a happy young man there.

“Absolutely buzzing for him. I agree with Wazza. I think that position on the left is up for grabs, and he could be the man to take it.”

When could Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon next play for England?

Gordon has won three caps for England, with his debut coming in the 1-0 friendly loss to Brazil in March.

He will be eager to add to his international tally at the tournament, with England set to face Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia in Group C.

England’s first game takes place on Sunday 16 June and sees them travel to Gelsenkirchen to take on Serbia.

Gareth Southgate’s side then take on Denmark – whom they beat in the Euro 2020 semi-finals – four days later in Frankfurt.

England then round off their group on Tuesday June 25 in Cologne against Slovenia.
