TAMPA, Fla. - Given the standard that is University of Tampa baseball, five years might seem like an eternity. Alas, the Spartans’ time arrived once again Saturday afternoon in Cary, N.C.
An 8-3 win over Angelo (Texas) State lifted UT to its ninth national title and equal the all-time Division II mark previously established by Sunshine State Conference rival Florida Southern.
The Spartans swept their way through the championship series winning all four games. They opened with a 9-3 win over the University of Indianapolis last Sunday before dispatching Southern New Hampshire, 7-3, on Tuesday and Catawba (N.C.) College, 7-2, on Thursday.

Joe Urso’s Spartans, who won 52 of 60 games and went 9-1 in NCAA play, had last won it all in 2019. Their last trip to the national championship series was in 2021.
For Urso, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America coach of the year who won his 1,000th game during the South Regional, the title is his sixth as the leader of the UT program. His other titles came in 2006, 2007, 2013, 2015 and 2019.
