'Exceptional': Paul Merson says £22m midfielder reportedly wanted by Spurs is like a young Gareth Barry

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to have a busy summer in terms of incomings and outgoings at N17.

Ange Postecoglou has done fairly well in his maiden season at Spurs, but there’s certainly a lot of work that still needs to be done.

Midfield is an area Tottenham could look to strengthen, and Spurs have been linked with a number of top talents in the middle of the park.

One of those is Adam Wharton, a player who has taken the Premier League by storm in the space of just a few months.

TBR Football recently revealed that Tottenham are monitoring the 20-year-old’s progress, even though Crystal Palace only signed him in January.

Wharton has done so well since his £22million move to Selhurst Park that he has made the England squad for Euro 2024.

And Paul Merson believes the Three Lions have an “exceptional” player on their hands in Wharton.

What has Paul Merson said in detail about Tottenham target Adam Wharton?

“I’m a massive fan of Wharton,” Merson wrote on Sky Sports. “He’s an exceptional talent and I’m not shocked Southgate has included him.

“He gets the ball, and he gives it. He sees a pass and sees it very quickly. He never really gets caught on the ball.

“He’s a dream for the likes of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and (Eberechi) Eze. He’ll get the ball and give it to them with the minimum of fuss.

“He reminds me of a young Gareth Barry. He plays the simple pass that a lot of players don’t play.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if he played with Declan Rice and Bellingham in England’s midfield with Foden, Saka and Kane as the front three.”

Tottenham will struggle to sign Adam Wharton just months after Crystal Palace move

It’ll be exciting to see how Wharton gets on over the coming weeks as England seek to win their first major trophy since the mid-1960s.

Palace have well and truly struck gold with Wharton, and the fact that other Premier League clubs are already circling will no doubt flatter them.

There’s very little chance that Spurs and other suitors will get their hands on him this year, as his contract at Palace runs until 2029 and they won’t want to cash in on him right away.

The Eagles will have their own ambitions – with top talents such as Wharton, Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze in their ranks, they could well push for Europe next term.
