£34m striker who's 'destined to be among the greats' is wanted by Arsenal as Sesko alternative - journalist

Arsenal are likely to have a busy summer on the cards as Edu and Mikel Arteta look to bolster their ranks for next season.

The Gunners took the Premier League title race to the final day and also reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League last term.

Arsenal have made good progress since Arteta took the reins in 2019 and they’ll hope they can go all the way next season.

The Gunners are reportedly looking to strengthen their attacking ranks by bringing in an out-and-out No. 9, a type of player they don’t currently have.

And while RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is said to be their top target, Arsenal also have other strikers on their summer wishlist.

Ben Jacobs has now spoken about a number of alternatives to Sesko on the Gunners list, including Bologna’s Joshua Zirkzee.

What has Ben Jacobs said about Arsenal and Joshua Zirkzee?

Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “They still have Viktor Gyokeres, Evan Ferguson and Joshua Zirkzee on their list.

“Zirkzee, most believe, will end up at Milan, but that could be one to watch if he doesn’t.

“And people kind of don’t realise sometimes that you have to have four or five names, and the four or five names should not be construed as backups.

“The biggest strengths in recruitment is being able to pick four or five, all of which you think can work and succeed and thrive.”

What could Arsenal expect from Joshua Zirkzee?

Zirkzee is a quality player with a very high ceiling, so it’s not surprising that Arteta and Edu are apparently pursuing him.

Former Italy international Francesco Graziani has been quoted by Bologna Sport News as lauding the Dutchman’s potential.

“Technically he is very good and has shown that he sees the goal,” he said of the £34million man.

“In Zirkzee I seem to see the Dutch Dennis Bergkamp: someone who made your eyes shine with his technique.

Meanwhile, 1982 World Cup winner Giuseppe Bergomi gave even higher praise to the 23-year-old in March.

He told Corriere di Bologna, via Sempre Inter, that Zirkzee is “destined to be among the greats”.

Bergomi also said: “I love him as a player. I like players like that. He makes the whole team play well.

“He sees things on the pitch that we mere mortals don’t. Ball management, anticipation, technique, vision.”
