Report: Derby County could try to sign 'outstanding' free agent if they miss out on main targets

Derby County now ‘fancy’ signing one ‘outstanding’ free agent if they miss out on their main targets.

Derby County are now closing in on the summer transfer window and will be eager to get some additions across the line early doors.

The Rams have been linked with a number of players as they look to boost their chances of staying in the Championship next season.

With Conor Hourihane and Korey Smith leaving the club as free agents, Derby desperately need to bring in some midfield reinforcements.

They have already been linked with the likes of Bobby Clark, Ateef Konate and a return for Ebou Adams, while they have also started to consider back-up options if they miss out on their main targets.

Derby County are considering reunion with Ben Osborn

According to The Sun (p.55), Derby ‘fancy’ former Sheffield United man Ben Osborn.

The 29-year-old was released by the Blades this summer, having made 134 appearances and won promotion to the Premier League.

The report claims that Watford are targeting a move for the ‘outstanding’ free agent, while the Rams could also swoop for Osborn if they don’t land their other targets.

The Rams would be silly not to swoop for the free agent

Osborn was born in Derby and spent a season with their academy before joining Nottingham Forest, where he stayed for 16 years.

Despite his previous allegiance to their local rivals, the midfielder could be eager to link back up with his boyhood club and return to the Midlands.

However, Watford may guarantee him a much better opportunity at returning to the Premier League over the next few years.

The free agent will surely get snapped up very quickly though and the Rams may lose any chance at signing him if they are to focus on snapping up alternative targets first.

Osborn would be a very solid signing for any Championship club and could well join a team in the top half instead, but Derby should really take advantage of their relationship with Osborn in what could be a real coup this summer.
